And he added:
Fifteen people are we
Discarded on the shores of a sea
Men, women and children are we
No one to save us, to set us free
Come quickly or we perish
And lose the dear ones whom we cherish.
Dr. Leon Schmelzer, one of the directors of the JNF in Bukovina
Address: KarataÅ Beach, Turkey
He ripped the page out of the notebook and hid it in the skin of a potato that had been emptied of its contents. He handed it to the soldier, explaining in hand gestures and the fragmented Turkish they had taught him that he had hidden the letter inside a potato peel, in case the commanders of the guard would search the vehicles of the soldiers leaving the area. The soldier looked at him approvingly, buried the stuffed potato in his pocket, and to show Machiku that he would do all he could to bring the letter to its destination he crossed his arms over his chest
Machiku mimicked his sign and added a bow. Now there was no choice but to pray that God would see their misery and save them.
Friday morning he woke up sweating and wet from a night of incessant rain. He looked around. The others were still asleep in restless slumber. Donya to his right, Litti between them. That was how she felt protected, the sweet, beloved child. Who would have thought sheâd have a sunburned, hungry, thirsty childhood with no childish pleasures?
âWhat have I done?â he again thought with bitterness. âI took my dearest ones, left a warm home, and brought them to this wilderness, to this hostile environment. I ran like a thief in the night without saying goodbye. Who knows if my family is still alive?â
Every day he thought about what would have happened to him, his wife, and child if they had stayed. This particular morning he was exceedingly troubled, despairing over everything he had done. He began to speak in his heart with God, pleading and justifying himself as King Saul did when the Prophet Samuel rebuked him for not waiting for his arrival before going to war.
âWhat have you done?â asked Samuel. Saul replied in deep despair âI saw that the men were scattering, you had not come, and the Philistines were gathering to attackâ¦â
The other people with him were hungry, thirsty, and sick, lost on an unknown beach, helpless against the forces of wind and rain, the cold and sandstorms.
Every day they became more despairing of rescue. And he, Dr. Leon Schmelzer, for the first time in his life, was powerless. He could see no salvation. Maybe God had turned His countenance from him.
Each day someone else in the group attacked him because there was no one else to blame for their misery. The cries of desperation of these people whom he had persuaded to come with him were present wherever he went. He had nowhere to run. There was nothing to do but wait, he told himself. Wait for what? For whom? However, a man like him will not give up, will not despair.
